Windows 11 & Scheduled Updates

Upgrading to windows 11

DASA Technology will need to upgrade all Windows computers to Windows 11 before the start of the 2024 Fall Term on August 18th, 2024. All newly purchased computers ship with Windows 11 and we will continue to leave those machines on Windows 11 during deployment. Implementing this upgrade ensures our computers will continue to receive the latest security updates from Microsoft in the future.

Last month, we provided an opportunity to all faculty and staff who wanted to upgrade their computers the means to do so on their timeline. We encourage you to take advantage of this opportunity as soon as possible so you can perform the upgrade at a convenient time. The manual upgrade process requires you to be on campus, keep your computer awake, and connect to the Internet for at least one hour during installation.

We will begin scheduling automated updates for staff in May once the spring term has concluded.  We understand that faculty will need to be upgraded sooner to ensure no interruption to instruction, finals, and grade submission at the end of the semester. Consequently, we will begin scheduling faculty machines for an automatic upgrade starting March 18th, 2024. Automatic computer upgrades will occur between 11 pm and 4 am if the computer is powered on and connected to the network on campus. If you have a computer at home, you can leave it powered on and connected to the VPN overnight. You do not have to log in to the computer for the upgrade.

The best way to control when your computer is upgraded to Windows 11 is to complete the installation manually. We are happy to assist you, and if you run into any issues, please email dasa-tech-help@ncsu.edu!
