Google Storage Quotas Coming

Google Storage Quotas Coming

JULY 25, 2022 – DASA Technology was notified on Tuesday, July 19th, 2022, that Google will no longer provide Google Workspace customers with unlimited storage. The Office of Information Technology (OIT) has been working with Google, and partner institutions, to begin evaluating options and potential impacts at NC State University.

While we do not know all the details, we will share information as it is available. This week, for example, we learned that quotas will look like this:

  • Faculty & Staff: 50GB
  • Students: 10GB
  • Shared Drives: Still being discussed

Over 80% of all NC State faculty, staff, and students use less storage than these quotas. As a result, we do not anticipate this will create significant hardship for most of our stakeholders.

There is no need to take any action now, but you can certainly begin evaluating your storage to determine if there are items you could remove. The Office of Information Technology will provide an initial university-wide communication about this in early fall. This email will contain information about training opportunities and resources that will help you make more informed decisions about your storage. It will also contain information about the deadline for ensuring storage is within quota compliance, which we believe will be sometime in late 2023.

DASA Technology will also be developing resources and opportunities to dive deeper, which we will roll out once we receive more concrete information from OIT.
