Graduate Assistant Appointments

The resources here are intended for managers and department contacts for hiring graduate assistants.

Graduate assistantships provide graduate students with the opportunity to focus their work on their education, furthering both the student’s degree and the mission of NC State department or unit.  DASA Human Resources works with hiring managers to insure that graduate assistants are appointed following the procedures set by the Graduate School.  Units that regularly hire graduate students are able to submit requests directly to the NextGen system in MyPackPortal. Please contact Tammie Maurice with any questions.

Graduate Assistant Updates and News

Fall 2020 News and Updates from the Graduate School (July 6, 2020)

Update – Payroll Deduction for Student Fees:  we will not be able to offer the payroll deduction option for student fees to qualifying graduate students on a fellowship appointment as previously announced. Continued discussion with our campus partners revealed some of the complexities behind the process that does not make this option feasible to students on fellowship appointments. Therefore, only qualifying graduate students with an active graduate assistantship will have access to this benefit. Students on a fellowship appointment can still enroll in the University’s monthly payment plan to pay their education expenses including student fees.

Graduate Student Employment Dates (June 17, 2020)

Fall GA appointment dates have been revised alongside the new academic calendar.  Note that these dates are required for Teaching Assistants, but other GA job codes may use alternate start and end dates during the Fall semester.  However, departments are highly encouraged to use the Fall semester dates instead of the dates on which classes begin and end.  The Graduate School recommends that departments enter semester-to-semester appointments instead of yearlong appointments given the pending decisions regarding Spring 2021 academic calendar.

Fall 2020 Pay and Benefits – The revised Fall GA appointment dates should not have an impact on the total compensation received by the graduate students. for a typical GA contract that extends from 8/5 to 12/31, the per period paycheck will be slightly lower since the total compensation will be paid over 10.7 pay periods instead of 9.9 pay periods.

Graduate Student Payroll Deduction for Student Fees (June 17, 2020)

The Graduate School and Cashier’s Office are pleased to announce that, beginning in Fall 2020, qualifying graduate students may request payroll deduction for student fees. The option will be available through the Student Accounts tile in MyPack Portal by the fall tuition and fees due date of July 28 to August 21. Graduate students must meet the following criteria to participate in the payroll deduction for student fees:

  1. They must have an active graduate assistantship in the HR System with an effective date on or before September 4, 2020, and the appointment must extend through at least October 30, 2020.
  2. They must be in a GSSP eligible position as described at the following website: https://grad.ncsu.edu/students/gssp/.
  3. They must select the payroll deduction option by August 21, 2020.

Students can use the payroll deduction option to pay the full amount of student fees and, if applicable, the engineering enhancement fee. See the explanation of student fees at https://studentservices.ncsu.edu/your-money/tuition-and-fees/fees-explanation/.

Payments will be deducted from the student’s stipend/fellowship payment starting with the August 22nd paycheck over six pay periods. If the appointment is terminated, any outstanding balance in fees must be paid in full.

The following is an illustration of per pay period deduction for a typical GA contract for Fall 2020:
