University Approves AI Tools for Select Usage
NOVEMBER 19, 2024 – On Wednesday, November 20, the Office of Information Technology (OIT) announced the general availability of the following Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools at NC State for full-time faculty, staff, and students.
- Gemini Chat
- Gemini Workspace [separate paid subscription necessary]
- Windows CoPilot
- Windows CoPilot Plus [separate paid subscription necessary]
- Zoom AI Assistant [already available at NC State]
- Grammarly AI [separate paid subscription necessary]
- ChatGPT Teams, Enterprise, and EDU [separate paid subscription necessary]
These tools are being made available for use with data classified as green or yellow. Using AI tools in existing or new products that will access red or purple classified data (including any HIPAA data) will require opening an IT Purchase Compliance (ITPC) process with DASA Technology and OIT.
Additional guidance on the use of AI tools will be provided by several committees around campus that will address instructional, administrative, and research use cases. In the interim, please use your best judgment with these tools, understanding that AI remains a new endeavor and NC State and/or the Division of Academic and Student Affairs may need to provide additional tools, structures, procedures, and guidelines to ensure the safe implementation of these resources within our institution.
As with other new technologies, please expect shortcomings in both the technology and the output. DASA Technology Services has not received additional training or guidance on these tools, so we will be learning alongside you as NC State embarks on the AI era. We look forward to seeing how this technology shapes the lives of our students, their experiences at NC State, and how we work together.
These resources, in addition to what OIT will share in their release tomorrow, may be helpful as you begin your journey.
