Gone Phishing…

Gone Phishing 2024

AUGUST 14, 2024 – It’s hard to believe that August is already here, and our students are back to join us for another exciting year in the Wolfpack. This is also the time of year when phishing scams are most prevalent for faculty, staff, and students. NC State is not immune from this incredibly effective and dangerous form of social engineering, and it is increasingly occurring in all communication systems, including social media and text messaging.

Given the increased email, text, and social media communication at this time of year, it presents an ideal window of opportunity to attack vulnerable faculty, staff, and students who may be too overwhelmed with their communication tools to evaluate messages for potential phishing attacks properly.

NC State provides a short video overview of phishing, including details on identifying and handling these situations. The video can be seen at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bRAL0h7AjzY.

Here are a few reminders from your DASA Technology Services team:

  1. DASA Technology Services staff will be easily identified by wearing an NC State badge that shows our department and photo or wearing one of our uniform shirts/jackets. If you don’t see these, please ask to see verification for all unfamiliar faces!
  2. DASA Technology Services and OIT staff will never ask you to share your password with us, and you should never share your password or 2FA codes with anyone.
  3. DASA Technology Services staff will only email you about work-related topics from our official ncsu.edu email addresses.

Please forward all phishing attempts to abuse@ncsu.edu and see the OIT IT Security resource website at https://oit.ncsu.edu/my-it/email-calendaring/phishing/phishing-attempts-at-nc-state/.
