Phishing Scams on the Rise

Phishing Scam Awareness Header

AUGUST 16, 2023 – It’s hard to believe that August is already here and our students are coming back to join us for another exciting year in the Wolfpack. This is also the time of year when phishing scams are most prevalent for faculty, staff, and students. NC State is not immune from this incredibly effective and dangerous form of social engineering and it is increasingly occurring in all communication systems including social media, and text messaging.

Given the increased email, text, and social media communication at this time of year, it presents an ideal window of opportunity to attack vulnerable faculty, staff, and students who may be too overwhelmed with their communication tools to properly evaluate messages for potential phishing attacks.

NC State provides a short video overview of phishing that includes details on how to identify and handle these situations. You can see the video at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bRAL0h7AjzY.

The Office of Information Technology (OIT) also recently published a helpful article called “Watch Out for Phishing Lures” which you can check out by clicking here.

Here are a few reminders from your DASA Technology Services team:

  1. DASA Technology Services staff will be easy to identify by either wearing an NC State badge that shows our department and photo or wearing one of our uniform shirts/jackets.
  2. DASA Technology Services and OIT staff will never ask you to share your password with us, and you should never share your password or 2FA codes with anyone.
  3. DASA Technology Services staff will only ever email you about work-related topics from our official ncsu.edu email addresses.

Please forward all phishing attempts to abuse@ncsu.edu and see the OIT IT Security resource website at https://oit.ncsu.edu/my-it/email-calendaring/phishing/phishing-attempts-at-nc-state/
