Data Center Outage from October 15-18

As part of the university’s Power Forward Project, the Facilities Division plans to transition the facility housing a primary campus data center to the new, upgraded power distribution system. The project will take place from Saturday, October 15, through early Tuesday, October 18, resulting in a temporary power outage for many campus enterprise IT services.

The data center power outage has been confirmed for Saturday, October 15, through early Tuesday, October 18. We have updated the information on the news release with the updated details.

12:01 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 15 to 6 a.m. Monday, Oct. 17

  • Impacted enterprise services will be taken offline and will be unavailable to campus.

6 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday, Oct. 17

  • Campus enterprise services are expected to be available on generator power.

5 p.m. Monday, Oct. 17 to 6 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 18

  • Services such as those listed above will be taken offline to transition the data center from the generator to the new campus utility infrastructure.

6 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 18

  • All services are expected to be available.

As a side note, we are aware that this time frame includes the open enrollment period to sign up for benefits. OIT staff have asked the Benefits Office to make sure that all of the links on web pages and any communications sent to campus point directly to the open enrollment website, not to the MyPack Portal. The end goal is that there should be no interruption to access the open enrollment website.


Schedule and Availability of IT Services

During this time, the Office of Information Technology (OIT) will continue to operate some IT services on backup power in a degraded state or at offsite data centers. Google Workspace and campus authentication services such as Shibboleth and Duo Security are expected to function as normal.

To minimize the greater risk of prolonged outages due to power transitions, OIT will shut down many critical enterprise IT services following the schedule below. 

12:01 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 1 to 6 a.m. Monday, Oct. 3:

Impacted enterprise services will be taken offline and will be unavailable to campus. These services include but are not limited to:

  • Advance System
  • Financial System
  • Human Resources System, including Wolftime and Time Clocks
  • MyPack Portal
  • OnBase Document Management System
  • Oracle Identity Management including Self-Service Password Management
  • RedHat Network Satellite service
  • SAS Visual Analytics and Business Intelligence Platforms
  • Student Information System
  • System Access Request (SAR)
  • Wolfpack Reporting System (WRS)

6 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday, Oct. 3

Campus enterprise services are expected to be available on generator power.

5 p.m. Monday, Oct. 3 to 6 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 4

Services such as those listed above will be taken offline to transition the data center from the generator to the new campus utility infrastructure.

6 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 4

All services are expected to be available.

In the event of inclement weather, the Facilities Division will reschedule the project for Oct. 14-16.

SEPT 15, 2022 – From the Office of Information Technology:

Due to the university’s Power Forward Project, the Office of Information Technology (OIT) will take offline many campus IT services on Friday, Sept. 30 until early Monday, Oct. 3.

During this timeframe, the Facilities Division plans to transition the facility housing a primary campus data center to the new, upgraded power distribution system, resulting in a temporary power outage. 

OIT will continue to operate some IT services on backup power in a degraded state. Google Workspace and campus authentication services such as Shibboleth and Duo Security are expected to function normally.

Critical Services

To minimize the greater risk for prolonged outages due to power transitions, OIT will shut down many critical IT services beginning at 2 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 30. These services include but are not limited to:

  • MyPack Portal (Self-Service)
  • WolfTime and Time Clocks
  • Human Resources, Financial Reporting, including the Wolfpack Reporting System, and the Student Information System
  • Oracle Identity Management, including Self-Service Password Management 
  • OnBase Document Management System
  • RedHat Network Satellite service
  • The Advance System
  • SAS Visual Analytics and Business Intelligence platforms

Note: Financial Production and the System Access Request (SAR) systems will be shut down at 6 a.m. Friday, Sept. 30 due to heavy batch processing requirements.

Service resumption

OIT will start to bring all systems back online starting at approximately 8 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 2. All systems are expected to be available by 7 a.m. Monday, Oct. 3.

Note: If inclement weather occurs, the Facilities Division will reschedule the project for Oct. 14-16.
