Critical Windows Update – Rollout Begins July 7th, 2022

Microsoft Security Patch Rollout

July 1, 2022 – DASA Technology was notified by the Office of Information Technology (OIT) that a critical security update for all computers running Windows 10 will be needed by August 10th, 2022. Beginning on Thursday, July 7th, 2022 DASA Technology will deploy this critical update to all Windows 10 desktops and laptops. The update will run between 11:00 PM and 4:00 AM on a rolling basis, covering a few dozen computers each night, and will take up to 1 hour to run. It will culminate with a reboot of your computer.

Since the update will only start if your computer is on, we ask that you leave your desktop computer up and running each night until further notice. More specifically, you should save your work and log off, but do not turn your computer off

If you happen to be using the computer when the update begins, you will see a dialog box informing you of the update; your session may be interrupted, and eventually, the computer will reboot. If you happen to be working on your computer when the update starts, we advise that you save your work, and leave the computer on so the update will complete.

Laptops connecting wirelessly will also get the update, but only when the device is connected to the university wireless network. Thus, it is important that you try to find a time to leave your laptop on campus, connected to campus WiFi, and powered on overnight. We will be in touch with you individually if it appears that we’ve not been able to get the update to your laptop.

You also have the option to manually run this update, at a time that is convenient for you while on campus. The update is available via our self-service option with instructions available in this document. This option is encouraged for those with a laptop, in particular, to ensure the update is completed successfully before August 10th, 2022.

Computers that are not updated by August 10th, 2022 will have a university-wide policy pushed to them to update at the earliest time, which may be intrusive to your work. As a result, DASA Technology will be monitoring the progress of the updates and will provide guidance in cases where the patch has not yet been applied.

This update is only for Windows 10 and does not impact any computers running different Windows OS versions, Apple macOS, or ChromeOS devices. Please send any questions to dasa-tech-help@ncsu.edu.

Thank you for your continued support,
